This is a necessary check on a lady’s bodily function and especially of the female reproductive system- breast, ovaries, womb and vagina. it is necessary to have these checks to pick up diseases/issues that would be easily be handled from the onset. At Velvet Women and Children Clinic, we seek to help with these annual checks by taking you through a breast examination, pelvic examination, pap smear, ultrasound, urine test, and STI screen. We recommend doing these annual checks at a timed period of the year. e.g On birthdays, or week before e.t.c for easier recall of the appointment.
This is done commonly to check for cancer of the cervix and/or any changes that may lead to cancer of the cervix. We use a speculum, lubricated to examine the cervix after making sure the client is comfortable and lying down on the examination couch.The lubricated speculum is then slowly inserted into the virginal and then made to visualize the cervix. Once it is seen then the cervical brush is used to pick up a sample from the cervix. This sample is then put on a slide an then sent to our laboratory for review by the pathologist. The result of this is usually 5 days and then this is forwarded to your email address with your consent.
When to Visit an Annual Check Up Doctor
Generally, gynaecologists recommend annual screening for all women and girls between ages 13-15 years. However, you should visit an obgyn when you have problems in the pelvic, vulvar, vaginal pain, and unusual bleeding from the uterus. Checkups at an early stage are vital as the doctor ensures that girls are developing okay. After the first doctor’s appointment, it is essential to continue with the annual exam until you are 21 or as recommended by the doctor.
Besides, there are other pelvic conditions that your obgyn includes in the annual check up list when you visit. These include;
- Congenital abnormalities
